Olympic Chaos Erupts as VP J.D. Vance’s Motorcade Nearly Delays U.S. Figure Skater, Sparks Boos in Milan

MILAN — At the opening days of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy, a stunning moment of diplomatic embarrassment unfolded as Vice President J.D. Vance found himself at the center of controversy that nearly overshadowed America’s athletic performances.

Vance’s large, high-security motorcade created unexpected chaos in the narrow streets surrounding the Milano Skating Arena Friday afternoon reportedly blocking access routes and holding up U.S. figure skating star Alysa Liu and her coaching team just as the women’s short program was about to begin. Liu barely made it inside in time to compete, later finishing second behind Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto and helping Team USA take an early lead in the team event.

The moment proved humiliating for the administration’s Olympic delegation: during the Parade of Nations at the Opening Ceremony, crowds around San Siro Stadium greeted the appearance of Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance on the giant video screens with sustained boos and whistles—a rare and forceful expression of disapproval toward an American political figure at the Games.

Journalists and multiple international outlets noted that while U.S. broadcasters largely downplayed or cut the audible boos, foreign feeds made it clear that spectators were vocally unhappy, underscoring a deep political undercurrent in what is traditionally a non-political sporting event.

The controversy has sparked widespread online debate, with critics slamming the vice president’s presence and its impact on Team USA logistics, while supporters argue that political figures have every right to represent their countries. Meanwhile, Liu’s performance has become a symbolic rallying point—not just for American pride on the ice, but for athletes navigating global political attention as the world watches both sport and statecraft collide on the Olympic stage.

What is even scarier is how if you were viewing the opening ceremony from NBC in America, they censored the booing out and dubbed in applause. The government is lying on mainstream media about how the world is viewing our country. Also, since this, Donald Trump has been attacking Olympic athletes on name with his X account.
