MURDER, MONEY, AND SILENCE: How Power Protected a Killer and Paid the Price in Billions

MURDER, MONEY, AND SILENCE: How Power Protected a Killer and Paid the Price in Billions

In a stark reminder of how geopolitics and profit can eclipse justice, Jamal Khashoggi, a columnist for the The Washington Post owned by Jeff Bezos, was brutally killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018. U.S. intelligence has concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the operation — an act that sparked global outrage and raised urgent questions about press freedom and human rights.

Fast forward to 2025, and Bezos’ Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia’s state-linked AI venture, Humain, worth more than $5 billion. The deal aims to build a massive “AI Zone” in the kingdom, designed to position Saudi Arabia as a global hub for artificial intelligence innovation, infrastructure, and training.

Critics argue this move marks a moral about-face. How long after a sovereign state is implicated in the murder of a journalist who worked for your paper should you enter into a multibillion-dollar deal with that same state? For many observers, the answer in this case — roughly six years — raises serious questions about where corporate priorities lie.

The AWS-Humain partnership will bring advanced AI infrastructure, cloud computing services, and training programs to Saudi Arabia, aligning with the kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals to diversify its oil-dependent economy. The collaboration will include dedicated AI servers, data centers, and support for local talent development — a significant technological boost for Riyadh’s ambitions.

But for critics of the deal, the deeper issue isn’t cloud servers or innovation zones — it’s the optics of close business ties between one of the world’s richest companies and a government with a documented history of human rights abuses. Years before, allegations even surfaced that Saudi operatives had hacked Bezos’ phone in an apparent attempt to influence media coverage related to the Khashoggi killing.

As Saudi investments flow into global tech and AI infrastructure, the question lingers: at what cost does corporate cooperation come when it intersects with justice, accountability, and the rights of independent journalists?

Khashoggi was lured into a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, never to return. He was dismembered. His voice was erased. His crime? Speaking honestly about power.

Let that sink in.

The journalist was murdered.

The alleged architect of that murder remained in power.

And the kingdom went on to do business as usual — rewarded with billions.

No sanctions strong enough.

No justice served.

No consequences that mattered.

Instead, profit prevailed.

Human rights advocates say this deal sends a chilling message: if you’re powerful enough and wealthy enough, even murder won’t stop the money from flowing.

For everyday people, this raises an uncomfortable question:

If a journalist can be silenced and forgotten this easily, what chance does the average citizen have?

In a system where truth is disposable and profit is sacred, outrage becomes temporary — but deals are permanent.

And sadly the world moves on.
