Carl, nominated to be Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations, appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for a confirmation hearing marked by bipartisan concern about his record and lack of diplomatic experience. His nomination was first submitted in June 2025 and re-submitted in January 2026 after expiring.
Contentious Hearing and Confrontations
During the hearing, senators pressed Carl on past social posts — many now deleted — in which he embraced the so-called “great replacement” conspiracy theory, questioned the value of the federal Juneteenth holiday, and made disparaging remarks about Jewish people and other groups.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) highlighted Carl’s statements about the “erasure” of white culture, prompting confusion and awkward exchanges as Carl struggled to define what he meant by white identity and what cultural elements he believed were under threat. Murphy later posted clips of the hearing on social media, calling Carl a “legit white nationalist.”
In a separate line of questioning, Republican Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) announced he would not support Carl’s nomination, citing Carl’s “anti-Israel views and insensitive remarks about the Jewish people,” including a podcast appearance where Carl said Jews “often loved to play the victim.” Curtis said Carl’s record made him unfit to represent U.S. interests abroad.
